Infineum UK Ltd., a leading specialty chemical company with research and development capabilities worldwide, has teamed up with Syrris to globally roll-out Atlas PC Software for lab automation, data standardization, and enhanced Process Analytical Technology capabilities in Infineum’s lubricant and fuel additives research and development. The Syrris team provided a timely synchronized global software roll-out with training and support packages that ensured all reactors, and their users, could smoothly transition to a new way of working.
Supporting culture change
Dr. Roy Lester, Process Technologist with Infineum UK, led the project. Dr. Lester and his team are focussed on developing lubricant and fuel additives, an area that is undergoing huge change due to industry focus on shifting to developing sustainable cost-effective solutions that reduce energy and raw material utilization.
Infineum selected Atlas PC Software for global roll-out as it supported their PAT (Process Analytical Technology) requirements and would provide for standardized collection of detailed data at all stages of process development. This global software rollout also fostered a shift in organizational culture, moving away from focusing primarily on product attributes and instead assessing and optimizing all stages of chemical development.
Global software for data standardization
To ensure that all reactor platforms across Infineum were ready for the shift, the Syrris software team provided integration support and customization to ensure a smooth transition to a new integrated way of working. Atlas PC Software’s ability to work with existing equipment, such as viscometer probes found across the lubricant and fuel additives industry, was a key element of its support. Global implementation of Atlas PC Software created efficiencies that enhanced the Infineum reactor so that it now only required one software application to collect data from multiple sensors, efficiently making the data collected uniform and ready for further analysis.
Syrris understood our goal and did a fantastic job in rolling out Atlas PC Software and introducing it to everyone. They were able to achieve a global rather than staged installation across our facilities in the UK, France, and the US, all in one go.
A showcase PAT reactor
To best explore the possibilities of Atlas Software for PAT, a new showcase reactor designed by Dr. Lester based upon the Atlas HD Jacketed Reactor was built. The result is the I.A.P.E.T.U.S platform, I.A.P.E.T.U.S stands for: Integrated Automate ‘n’ PAT Enhanced Technology Understanding System. (This isn’t just a clever name, as Iapetus was also the the Titan to have fathered Atlas.) To create an integrated reactor system that could achieve Infineum’s requirements, Dr. Lester worked closely with the Syrris team on every aspect of the project specifications, including development of a unique triple-wall glass reactor vessel with an inspection window and multiple sealable probe ports.
