Reaction and Process Optimisation |
|
|
|
Reaction optimisation, sometimes referred to as method development, can be a very expensive process both in terms of time and money. Poorly optimised reactions can also be costly when transferred to large scale due to poor efficiency.
Process optimisation (study of reactions under manufacture-realistic conditions) is important to develop the correct process for the reaction to be scaled-up. Atlas is an ideal system for the study of process optimisation where together with both reaction monitoring and calorimetry, important optimisation information such as temperature, pH, FBRM, turbidity and IR (infra red analysis) can be automatically plotted and logged in real time.
The Syrris Atlas automated reactor system allows parallel process chemistry to be performed in fully controlled jacketed reactors, round bottom flasks, refluxing reactor tubes or just reaction vials.

Process Optimisation in Flow
Some of the difficulties of reaction optimisation include the large amount of theoretical reaction space to investigate, the requirement for significant quantities of high cost or scarce substrates, poor scalability and the large amount of time required to perform the experimentation. Flow chemistry has the ability to assist in all of these areas.

The Africa and FRX flow systems are ideal for reaction optimisation studies.
The Africa flow system combines synthesis, analysis and liquid handling to enable the following variables to be automatically modified and the effect measured:
- Reaction temperature
- Reaction time
- Equivalents of substrates/reagents
- The reagent/catalyst
